Upper back pain is a terrible thing that can happen to anyone. And the treatment depends on the different causes. Back pains are so frustrating, and they decrease your work efficiency as well, while the common causes of upper back pain are generally lousy posture, weak spine, accidents, etc.
Around 4 million people in Australia (16% of the population) have back problems, according to self-reported data from ABS (Australian Bureau of Statistics) 2017-2018 National Health Survey (NHS). These are alarming reports, especially when 16% of the population suffers from some back pain issues. The issue has increased even more this year as the work-from-home culture has come alive now, resulting in people spending more time sitting at home in front of computers. Less body movement and an idle lifestyle will worsen this condition in the future.
Likewise, the four leading causes of upper back pain are:
A sedentary lifestyle or sitting in front of a computer for long hours with a bad posture is the cause of upper back pain. It can also cause structural changes in the neck and back, and there is a possibility of muscle deconditioning and weakness in the back muscles. When this happens, the back muscles will not be able to hold the spine in neutral alignment like before.
If one hunches forward while working, the pressure exerted on their spine increases. Also, not just the spine, the discs, ligament, muscles, and other soft tissues are affected as well.
Inappropriate Lifting Techniques
The upper back experiences undue pressure while picking up objects without keeping the spine aligned. Carrying heavy objects on the head towards the left or right and not at the center can cause shoulder and upper back pain. In general, lifting too heavy objects may cause upper back pain.
Overworking the Back and Shoulder Muscles
If one puts their upper back through stress for a long time, like spending a day lifting heavy objects, helping a friend move into a new apartment, and then going to the gym to work out, you should know that it’s a bad idea. Meanwhile, doing painting works or fixing ceiling fans (working above the head) could cause severe strain on muscles, ligaments, and inflammation in the upper back.
Collision or Accident
Vehicular accidents (bike/car crash), fall from a height (ladder/steps), sports collisions (hockey, football, etc.), and the like can result in severe upper back pain. It can injure the spinal bone, muscles, ligament, nerves, discs, and other soft tissues.
The reasons for upper back pain don’t end here. Modern lifestyle, lack of exercise, intake of toxic chemicals, and many other factors increase the weakening of the muscles.
One can reduce the chances of excruciating pain by avoiding these lifestyles and adopting a healthy one. But there are some lesser-known reasons which may also cause back pain. These may not be the main reason but may assist the increase of the present problem, and they are:
- Thoracic herniated disc
- Compression fractures
- Severe spinal deformity
Although these are the common reasons, sometimes the causes of upper back pain are generally a combination of the mentioned reasons. So it’s ideal to consider consulting a doctor if you feel severe pain while sitting or standing.
