That pain in your lower back that runs down your leg can be very uncomfortable. Whether you’re sitting down or standing up, you might feel a little hopeless if you can’t find any relief from your sciatica pain.
A professional stretch practitioner’s goal is to help you find relief from sciatic nerve pain by simple stretches.
Sciatica can be the result of various issues within your body. Problems such as a herniated disk in the spine, or bone spurs, can cause the sciatic nerve to become pinched.
The sciatic nerve is the longest in your body. It starts in the lower back, goes through the hips and buttocks, and then splits off into each leg. When this nerve is pinched, it can cause pain that will usually last a few weeks and affect multiple parts of your body.
Do You Have Sciatica Pain?
Sciatica pain can be incredibly uncomfortable or nothing but a mild annoyance. However, the pain will always follow the sciatic nerve. Furthermore, while it is rare for the pain to be experienced in both legs, it is possible. Some other symptoms of sciatica include:
- Feeling of an electric shock
- Burning sensation
- Muscle weakness
Stretches for Relieving Pain
Assisted stretching is great because it allows you to sit back and enjoy the movement. You won’t have to worry about making any mistakes because they will guide you through every step of the way.
The simple stretches become peaceful because a stretch practitioner handles it all. Just relax and let them do what they do best!
Knee to Chest
A stretch practitioner might have you try the knee to chest stretch for pain relief. They’ll have you lying on your back and will bend your knee and bring it up to your chest. Everyone’s body has a different tolerance to stretching, especially if it’s something you don’t do often. Therefore, a stretch practitioner will make sure to tailor the stretch specifically for you.
After holding the leg close to your chest, they’ll lower it back to the starting position and do the same for your other leg.
Knee to Opposite Shoulder
When a stretch practitioner begins the knee to opposite shoulder stretch, they’ll start similarly to the knee to chest stretch. In fact, the main difference for the whole stretch is where they’ll be aiming the knee.
Lying flat on your back, they’ll bend your leg and bring it in the direction of the opposite shoulder. After coming back to the resting position, they will do the same for the other leg.
As you’re lying down on your back with bent knees, you’ll squeeze your gluteal muscles as a stretch practitioner helps you gently raise your body. This will create a line from your shoulders to your knees.
After briefly holding that position, they’ll lower your body back to where you started before repeating the process.
The pelvic tilt also begins with bent knees while on your back. Once you’re settled in this position, you will tighten your abdominal muscles and slightly raise the pelvis toward your upper body. Your feet should always be flat throughout this stretch.
Back Flexion Stretch
For the back flexion stretch, a stretch practitioner will bring both of your knees toward your chest as you are lying down. Simultaneously, you’ll be slightly bringing your head forward. After that position is held, they’ll slowly bring your legs back to their resting point.
Seated Spinal Twist
A stretch practitioner will guide you to sit up with your legs in front of you. With one leg bent, the foot of that leg will be placed on the opposite side of the resting leg. This will be followed by twisting your body toward the bent knee.
While on your stomach, a stretch practitioner will have you rest your palms flat, then push up so that your elbows are almost straight. For the modified cobra, your chest should be around 45 degrees above the surface.
Lower Trunk Rotations
You will start lower trunk rotations flat on your back with your knees bent. With your knees together, a stretch practitioner will move them to the side, hold your legs in that position, then bring them back up. The same will be done for the other side.
