Maintaining a healthy lifestyle has never been easy, not in the modern world, at least.
Most of us have primarily sedentary jobs. Additionally, foods high in fat, carbohydrates, and sugars are staples in most of our diets. Lastly, technology has made it incredibly easy to be absorbed by screens, leaving little in the way of active lifestyles.
These problems are only exacerbated when we’re stuck at home on lockdown. We don’t have access to gyms or half of the other activities we enjoy doing. Over time, this can take a major toll on your physical wellness.
But don’t worry, there is light at the end of the tunnel. There are ways to adapt to your circumstances and adopt a healthy lifestyle while working from home and being stuck on lockdown.
Keep reading for our top strategies for maintaining your physical health during the COVID-19 pandemic.
1: Eat Healthy Foods
First, and perhaps most importantly, you need to watch what you’re putting in your body. Look at food as fuel and your body as a complex performance car.
You wouldn’t put cheap fuel in a Ferrari, yet we do it to our bodies every day. Instead, focus on fueling your body with natural, whole foods. These include:
- Whole grains
- Lean Proteins (fish, chicken, turkey, tofu)
- Seeds, nuts
Finally, be sure to stay hydrated throughout the day. Avoid drinking high calorie/high sugar beverages such as commercial coffees, sodas, energy drinks, juices, etc.
2: Stay Active
Next, though you may no longer have access to your gym, you can work on your physical health at home. Your physical wellness is important and shouldn’t be neglected because your circumstances change.
There are plenty of things you can do to stay fit and work on your heart health. For example:
- Walk, jog, or ride your bike around the neighborhood
- Start an exercise program at home (yoga, calisthenics, etc.)
- Buy equipment for a modest home gym
We don’t know how long COVID-19 is going to stick around. It may be worthwhile to invest in some home equipment to maintain your physical fitness.
3: Maintain Good Sleeping Habits
The importance of a healthy sleep cycle is often overlooked. However, it is one of the most vital aspects of maintaining mental, emotional, and physical wellness. Did you know that anything under seven hours of sleep is considered sleep deprivation?
When deprived of adequate sleep, we tend to experience mood changes, irritability, and other mental side-effects. Long term sleep deprivation can lead to stress, anxiety, depression, and even paranoia.
Physically, lack of sleep results in exhaustion, fatigue, and weight gain due to increased cortisol in our system. Read on here for more information about the connection between sleep and heart health.
4: Take Time for Self Care
Finally, to maximize your sanity and your physical wellness while stuck at home, make sure you’re taking time for self-care. If the rest of your family is at home with you, it’s easy to start feeling overwhelmed. It’s okay to ask for time alone.
Cater to your own needs. Here are some suggestions:
- Give yourself manicures and pedicures
- Take time to exercise
- Take long relaxing baths
- Play video games
- Spend time on your hobbies
- And more
Self-care looks different to different people. Just make sure you’re filling up your own bucket so you can continue to pour into others.
